Spice Up Your Life: The Ultimate Guide to an Organized Spice Drawer

If you've ever fumbled through a cluttered spice drawer, then you're in luck! In today's guide, I'll walk you through a few simple yet effective ways to transform your chaotic spice collection into a functional and (best of all) appealing setup. A well-organized spice drawer not only saves time but also enhances your cooking experience.

We made a YouTube video going through this whole topic so feel free to check it out!

Step 1: Declutter Your Drawer and Take Inventory

Start by emptying your spice drawer completely and wipe down! Consolidate any duplicates you find and discard anything that’s past its prime. Make a list of any spices you need to replace or add (this will come in handy while shopping for your spices).

Step 2: Choose the Right Storage Solution

Consider these options for organizing your spices efficiently:

  • Matching Spice Jars – Uniform containers create a clean, cohesive look. Here is what I used for my drawers. Take a look HERE
  • Drawer Liners – A non-slick liner will Prevent bottles from sliding around! and honestly just makes your drawer look pretty! I got mine at Walmart but here's a similar liner!
  • Spice Rack-I added an acrylic tiered drawer shelf and my drawer looks SO pretty with them! (this step can be skipped if your drawer isn't deep enough! you can just lay your jars flat on the sheet if needed but if you can I definitely recommend this step, it just helps it look organized and elevated!) Check it out here!
  • Labels – Clear labeling makes it easy to find what you need at a glance. Luckily my jars came with some already so that was already taken care of for me.
So, to reiterate the points above:

What I did in my personal drawer was empty out all of my spices and funneled them into matching spice jars and then arrange them in order alphabetically on the counter for when I would put them into my counter.

I lined my drawer with a simple non slick matt from Walmart.

I put in acrylic drawer shelves that made it so could organize and visually see my jars!

Step 3: Organize by Category or Frequency of Use

There are different ways to arrange your spices depending on your cooking style:

  • Alphabetically – Great for quick access. This option is my personal favorite and what I use.
  • By Cuisine – Keep Italian, Mexican, and Asian spices grouped together, ect.
  • By Frequency – Place everyday spices like salt, pepper, and garlic powder upfront.
I took my newly filled jars and organized them alphabetically on the acrylic drawer shelves.

Step 4: Maintain Your System

  • Regularly check for expired spices.
  • Return spices to their designated spot after use.
  • Refresh labels if they become faded or unclear.
I honestly don't have to upgrade too often; Just a few times a year I'd say. I have a bin of extra spices I keep on hand. It's nice because I can see exactly what spices I tend to run out of the most. I can save money by buying those spices in bulk and then just refilling the bottles as needed.
